Complex Oral Rehabilitation

Restoring and replacing missing, worn, broken and discoloured teeth are what Prosthodontists do! In an ageing population, more and more patients are getting to the point where their teeth are so heavily filled, they are constantly breaking, chipping, are unsightly or loose. Many are sick of going back to their dentist, constantly getting patched up, that they finally decide to get things fixed properly.

As this type of dentistry is very complex, there is more than one way to treat each case. Therefore, a large part of Dr. Giblin’s job is to inform and educate you in the treatments available so you can make the best decision for your situation. Dr. Giblin will assess the state of your teeth, gums, jaw joints, smile and speech. He will then tailor a solution to best fit your wishes, dental state and budget.

Oral rehabilitation may involve removing hopeless teeth, rehabilitation of the jaws and gums with bone and soft tissue surgeries, the placement of dental implants as anchors for new teeth, and the placement of crowns, bridges, veneers or dentures. They will often involve other specialties to help with the treatment, co-ordinating the treatment. The involvement of other specialists is often part of achieving this with Orthodontics (Orthodontists), root canal therapy (Endodontists), gum surgery (Periodontists) and oral surgery (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons) working together to achieve the greatest functional and aesthetic results possible.

The three years of extra training that a Prosthodontist undergoes allows them to diagnoses, plan, co-ordinate and treat these complex cases.
