Dental Implants
Dental Implants – an introduction
For over 30 years modern dental implants have offered hope to those individuals missing one or more teeth, or whose teeth have become broken or degraded due to injury or disease.
Advancements in dentistry have resulted in innovative approaches and new treatment options that are less invasive, easier to recover from, and result in superior results that you won’t want to wait to show off to others.
As such, dental implants represent the strongest, most durable and effective tooth replacement procedure that look, feel and function similarly to your natural teeth.
What are Dental Implants?
As it relates to tooth replacement options, dental implants are the closest you can get to the appearance and function of natural teeth.
Think of implants as artificial replacements for the natural roots of your teeth. These roots are similar to screws in that they are surgically positioned and screwed into the jaw bone, beneath the gums.
These posts fuse with your natural bone and become the foundation upon which one or more artificial teeth will be added.
Each artificial tooth is carefully designed and custom-made to match your natural teeth and fit your mouth to perfection. When the time comes, your artificial teeth will be screwed onto the post or posts previously implanted.
Why Dental Implants?
Dental implants allow patients to eat and smile with confidence, knowing that they are virtually indiscernible from your natural teeth by others, and that they will perform without fail no matter what you bite into. From crisp apples to tough steaks, these artificial pearly whites perform.
They also represent a good option for those for which dentures are not a good fit, and represent a long-term reliable solution, that when properly cared for can last a lifetime, making them a solid investment in oral care.
Other Benefits:
Look and feel like real teeth
Don’t impact speech like dentures sometimes do
No need to remove or deal with adhesives
Prevent jawbone loss due to fusing with your natural bone
Caring For Your Implants
It is imperative that good oral hygiene takes place prior to, during and post dental implant procedure in order to ensure proper healing and oral health.
Caring for dental implants is quick, easy and help keep these new pearly whites in tip-top shape for decades to come. In general, you will care for your implants in much the same way you would for the rest of your teeth, or as directed by your dentist.
Follow your dentist’s advice and:
Brush twice daily and/or after each meal with a low-abrasive toothpaste
Floss regularly (at least once daily)
Consider rinsing with a saltwater solution once or twice daily
If recommended, utilize an interdental brush, soft picks and/or water irrigation unit
